NC Lions Program to honor Veterans on Saturday, April 17 at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky MountNORTHEAST NC NEWS -- The North Carolina Lions, District 31-J, which includes the counties of Dare, Currituck, Gates, Perquimins, Pasquotank, Chowan, Hertford, Northampton, Halifax, Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Martin, Washington, Tyrell, Beaufort, and Hyde, is presenting a program honoring Veterans on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park located at 321 North Church Street in Rocky Mount, NC. For years, North Carolina Lions have participated in a grassroots celebration of the U. S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, with the goal to bring awareness of the significance and content of both of these important documents to the citizens of our state. Along with celebrating our liberties, rights, and responsibilities as U. S. citizens, the Lions' focus has spotlighted a year-long celebration of each branch of the United States Armed Services - Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the North Carolina National Guard. The focus for the 2009 - 2010 Lions year is Veterans. The featured speaker for the afternoon program will be James Irvin, a resident of Nashville, NC, who served for 14 years in the U. S. Army. Mr. Irvin is active in the American Legion, Post #110, and has held many statewide offices in the North Carolina American Legion organization. He also served for four years on the committee that was organized to fund and build the Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount. A memorial wreath will be laid at the Memorial in memory of those brave North Carolina men and women who have given their lives to help to preserve the liberties that we as citizens continue to have today. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is not available, but attendees are welcome to bring chairs. We welcome veterans, their families, and all interested parties.
