Fugitive Sex Offender, Wayne Boone, has been Captured in Suffolk, Virginia

Security Guard, Eugene Johnson III, Takes Him Down in a Supermarket

GATES COUNTY NC NEWS -- A fugitive sex offender, Wayne Boone, has been captured in Suffolk, Virginia. Boone is wanted in North Carolina for failure to register as a sex offender since 2001, Boone last registered as a sex offender with Gates County Sheriff's Office in the year of 2000. Additionally, Suffolk, Virginia is located approximately 20 miles north of Gates County, a small community of around 10,500 people.

On January 31, 2008, Officer Eugene Johnson III, while performing his duties as a security guard for Renaissance Investigations and Security in a local grocery, Fresh Pride in Suffolk, confronted a shoplifter later identified as Wayne Boone. Upon confrontation, Boone at first resisted Officer Johnson's attempt to arrest him, but when Officer Johnson produced his mace spray, showing Boone he was ready to use force if necessary, he surrendered quietly. When Suffolk Police arrived and ran a background check on Boone they discovered an outstanding warrant for his arrest in North Carolina.

Meanwhile, awaiting the arrival of the Suffolk Police, Boone attempted to bribe Officer Johnson. According to the Security Officer, Wayne Boone stated "I was stealing sandwich meat for my mother. Man, can you let me go I will give you $15 dollars if you let me go because I can't go to jail."

Furthermore, Officer Johnson said, "I'm glad I got this man off the streets and behind bars it could have been a lot worse than what it was." Meaning Boone's resistance to arrest. Officer Johnson added, "He really gave me a hard time before I showed him the mace."

Wayne Boone committed NCGS 14-202.1 Indecent Liberty with a Minor, twice in Gates County, North Carolina. Once on 5/23/1996 (Case 96000535), and then again on 7/20/1997 (97000644) after he absconded while on probation.

On 7/20/1997, Boone was a fugitive when he committed his second crime of Indecent Liberty with a Minor (case 97000644) in Gates County, North Carolina.

Back in 3/10/1997, Wayne Boone was convicted an absentia of Violating terms of Probation in his original case (Case 96000535), and received a sentence of 28 to 32 months incarceration, which was later changed to begin on 1/06/1999. The sentence was to begin after he served another 28 to 32 months for his second offense (Case 97000644) of Indecent Liberty with a Minor. In this second conviction on 11/12/1997, Boone was recommended to a work release program by the Gates County Court.

Therefore, Wayne Boone was to serve both sentences consecutively, but somehow, on 8/22/1999, Boone was released with no record of probation in both the NC Sex offenders Registry and North Carolina Department of Correction Public Access Information System.

Boone did register as a sex offender once on 11/27/2000, with the Gates County Sheriff's Office according to the NC Sex Offenders Registry, but apparently moved to Suffolk, Virginia without notifying authorities of his relocation. Once settled in Suffolk, Boone has been living there for years as a unregistered sex offender. Moreover, The Suffolk Police Department has Boone's last known address on file as 107 Lewis Avenue, Suffolk, Virginia.

Interestingly, while researching Wayne Boone's criminal history we discovered that the Probation Officer for Gates County, North Carolina is also the Gates County Board of Commissioners elected Vice Chairman, Commissioner David R. Brown. Brown would have been campaigning for his first term in office when Boone disappeared. Brown's name has also appeared in another County NC News release for violation of NCGS 143-318.12 written on January, 31, 2008, "U.S. Senator Dole Meets Secretly with Gates County Commissioners."

Finally, we would like to commend, Officer Eugene Johnson III, of Renaissance Investigations and Security as well as the Suffolk Virginia Police Department for their extra effort in capturing this most wanted sex offender from Gates County, North Carolina. Thank you officers. You have removed one of this country's worst criminal elements – Child Sex Offenders.
