Representative Tim Moore's Address Cleveland County on Progress within NC LegislatureCLEVELAND COUNTY NEWS -- House Representative Tim Moore's topic during his report to Cleveland County mentions a rumor of a House vote on the State Budget next week. Other news includes several bills ratified or referred to committee within by the NC House this week: "Talk around the Legislature continues on the budget. Yesterday the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution to keep the state running until the budget can be adopted. The House passed the Continuing Resolution today. The stalemate at the beginning of the week between Governor Perdue and the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate was unfortunately over how to extract more taxes from more people. This is the wrong direction to take. Tax increases cost jobs when North Carolina's unemployment rate is 11+ percent. As I have stated before, raising taxes in a time of recession hurts our families, working people, the elderly, and small businesses. We need to adopt a fiscally responsible, balanced budget without raising taxes. Essential core services --- education, health and human services, public safety, and debt service, need to be funded first. This funding can come from the $19 billion the state has to spend for the next year using current revenue sources without raising taxes. "Also, the rumor is that we may vote on the budget next week. "Several bills on the House calendar this week that we voted on were: "Senate Bill 405, Real Property Sales Information - An act to assist counties and the Department of Revenue in obtaining accurate real property sales information needed for property tax appraisals (Ratified). "Senate Bill 1062 strengthens domestic violence protective orders to provide for the protection of pets (Ratified). "Senate Bill 920 - Probation Reform - allows probation officers to access certain offenders' juvenile records, to make warrant-less searches and drug screening regular conditions of supervision, to add additional controlling measures for offenders subject to intermediate punishment, and to make clarifying amendments to streamline procedures for supervision of offenders in the community (Referred To Committee). "House bill 121 - Regulation of Golf Carts by Local Governments - allows all units of local government to regulate golf carts (Ratified). "Senate Bill 253 - Absentee Voting Improvements - An Act to make improvements to the absentee voting laws, especially to improve the ability of military and overseas voters to cast timely ballots (Passed Third Reading). "As always, please feel free to contact us with any concerns or comments you may have.
