Festivities are free to the general public, begin at 10:00 a.m., at the Benjamin Best Bed and Breakfast in located eastern North Carolina at 2193 Mewborn Church Road, Snow Hill, in Greene County, NC.
The Homegrown Handmade project began as collaboration among several public organizations, mainly the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, North Carolina Arts Council, and North Carolina Cooperative Extension, supported by the Golden LEAF Foundation. Maryanne Friend, director of development and marketing at Cultural Resources, brought Publisher, John F. Blair, into the marketing mix, combining private enterprise with NC government to promote North Carolina's tourism economy. Homegrown Handmade Project has taken the existing heterogeneous North Carolina culture and carefully blended the most eclectic sites into the new travel guide "Homegrown Handmade Art Roads and Farm Trails," accent the authentic arts and agricultural experiences, unique places and people in North Carolina. This 304-page book of 16 self-directed driving trails with ideas for affordable travel includes almost 1300 sites in 76 North Carolina counties. Trails are examples of what is now popularly called "agricultural tourism." Each trail tells a story of its unique place, such as "Lights&Waves&Action" and "Rock Stew Ramble" in the east, or "Hushpuppies, Pimento Cheese and Sweet Tea" and "Burning Rubber and Riding the Rails" in the Piedmont. Recreational farms, artist studios, organic foods, museums, festivals, and restaurants that serve local produce or serve up indigenous recipes with a dash of art, music or history is included in the book. Creative cultural resources continue to grow, mostly because of travelers who desire out-of-the-ordinary experiences. Homegrown Handmade directs interested travelers to such diverse activities as horseback riding, kissing llamas, picking blueberries, taking pottery lessons, celebrating Everybody's Day and other festivals, designing quilts . . . the possibilities are endless! The debut and kick-off of the "Homegrown Handmade Art Roads and Farm Trails," at the Benjamin Best Bed and Breakfast will be attended by representatives from the "Creeks, Cookin' and Culture" trail of Wayne, Greene, Lenoir and Jones counties displaying their stunning artwork, juicy berries, fine craft, and delicious foods. Free homemade strawberry ice cream will be served at the event, although a $10 fee will be charged for the kick-off luncheon. The lunch menu will include homemade ham biscuits, Nooherooka Natural beef burgers and hot dogs, and beverages. The "Homegrown Handmade," project is promoted in part by the NC Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency, which is dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina's arts, history and culture. The Department has several Offices that directly contributing to maintaining of open government by preserving Public Records. The State Archives contains public records of enduring value to the state's documentary heritage. The Search Room is open to the public, while the State Records Center promotes efficient records management through training and development of retention guidelines for public agencies; it also provides storage for inactive and semi-active public records.
